.   .   .   twenty years ago, freshly painted BNSF 6915 was leading four forties in four paint schemes on an eastbound manifest train about to make the curve east into Arizona's Crozier Canyon.

BNSF SD60M 9297 showed up in an experimental orange and green scheme with two kinds of red separation stripes back in May 1996.  The 960-series Dash-9's were delivered in orange and green with yellow stripes beginning in August 1996, and the first orange and green standard cab repaint, GP38-2 2099, rolled out the following month with the same silver undercarriage as the big GE's.  The first unit with what became the "final" BNSF scheme for standard cab power (until the swoosh emblem was adopted and the green changed to black) was GP35 2540, released into the wild on January 17, 1997.  The lead unit in the photo, SD40-2 6915, got its new duds in August 1997.

The second unit is perhaps the more interesting one, paint-wise.  BN SD40-2 6368 was a former C&S unit that ended up with the BN logo on the nose but without the "white face" cab front that usually went with it.
