Looking at Keith's beautiful McCloud River images prompted me to dig through my slide pile and I came up with a few shots of the McR.

1.  DRS-66-15  29 in deadline at McCloud, CA...the SD38s have arrived. 10/10/69

2.  RS12 32 same as above.

3.  RS12 32 at its new home on the California Western at Ft Bragg, CA  6/17/71

Lots of great pictures.  We don't often see so much of 39.  Thanks for sharing.

In photo #3, what is the "thing" added to the walkway of the unit?  It required the removal of a section of handrail, and probably the shortening of the hood doors to access the innards.

Never noticed it until I scanned the slide....have no idea.   Looking at my slides of CW 55-56 (x-MCR 32-33)  I find that they added those boxes to both sides of both units.  Here's a shot of both units on the afternoon freight at Ft Bragg,  6/17/71   Not quite ready for the paint booth.

Great...did not visit the road until it was shut down...  Dollar late and a dollar short.

First, great photos. Second, to answer the question, those boxes are water tanks. CWR was one of several roads to equip their diesels with rail washers that would wash sand off the railhead immediately after the locomotive, which reduced rail wear and friction and eased the passage of the following train. These were especially common on logging railroad diesels, where they could also play a role in fire prevention. The CWR arrangement of the water tank on the walkway was the most common application. Others included tanks mounted outside the fuel tank, which forced relocation of the air tanks to the top of the hood (as seen on Coos Bay Lumber and Canfor diesels) or slung across the top of the cab roof (Feather River Railway, McCloud River Lumber).

Number 39 crossing Lake Britton is a beautiful reflection image.

The 34 was sold by the McCloud to the Oregon & Northwestern RR and after they shut down the 34 has made it to Portola CA and the Feather River Rail Society. Hopefully one day she can return to the very nice McCloud River colors seen here.

The reflection shot is one of the finest McCloud photos I've seen.
