Nostalgia & History > Southern Pacific on the B&ODate: 11/15/20 06:16 Southern Pacific on the B&O Author: EL833 To tag along on the nice SP on the Milw post below, here is Southern Pacific U33C #8771 leading a southbound (westbound) on the B&O in Akron, Ohio in September 1978. This was back in the day run through power wasn't as common as it is today. SP units seemed to be the foreign power that showed up on the B&O through town most often- which was ok with me as I had little chances to visit the SP out west then. Another SP through town was this B30-7 leading an eastbound, also in Akron, in May 1979. It's still clean having been built in March of that year. A B&O GP9 works a local industry.

A. Schulman was a major plastics compounder until their acquisition by Lyondell Basel in 2018. Those would be plastic hoppers being switched in the background. A plastics compounder or "master batch" supplier adds UV stabilizers, processing aids and pigment to neat resin at a concentrated add weight. The compunded resin would then be mixed with neat resin at the molding house for manufacture of the final product. Schulman would have railcar loads inbound, but some if not much of their output would be in pallet sized "gaylord" continers for shipping to their customer. I'm not sure, but back then the B&O St Louis Line was still in and being used a lot. I would figure most of the StL traffic went via that route. There were a fair amount of SP units floating around in '78 and '79, so maybe it was some sort of HP equalization.
