Nostalgia & History > Signal Sunday, SP . . .Date: 11/15/20 07:01 Signal Sunday, SP . . . Author: 3rdswitch . . . during a Winterail visit in '92, an eastbound SP train was passing under a signal bridge near Lathrop, CA.

As your shutter clicked, the relay was dropping for the track circuit for the block he is entering, and signal 936 will illuminate; it is "approach lit". The block approaching 938 is unoccupied, the track circuit relay is up, and therefore the signal is dark. Working as intended. We all learned how to read "approach lit" signals for an indication of traffic. Date: 11/15/20 11:30 Re: Signal Sunday, SP . . . Author: UP951West Great slide . Perfect composition.

RC Lundgren Date: 11/15/20 13:22 Re: Signal Sunday, SP . . . Author: ble692 That is actually in Stockton. Specifically between El Pinal and Akers. The bridge just beyond the signal bridge goes over the Calaveras River and the cars stopped to the left of the 9755 are on McAllen Rd. The signal bridge did not last long on the UP and was gone by somewhere around 1999, although the footings for it survive to this day. A 3/4 mile long portion of McAllen Rd was also later closed to public use including this stretch over the SP/UP. The crossing itself and gates are still there, but the only users are official vehicles or people on foot or bike.

Author: 3rdswitch I thought I remembered taking this in the Stockton area, but, because so many out there know more than I do, I checked the milepost on the signal bridge with a timetable. Did they change mileposts? MY Altamont Press timetable shows Stockton as near MP 84? Ten miles north of here?

Now that crossing is at milepost 81.3. Date: 11/15/20 16:22 Re: Signal Sunday, SP . . . Author: ble692 I can't get the same angle as in the photograph, but check out this Google Maps view...
https://goo.gl/maps/S6qr8NB7eq6dYUvz7 Look just to the right of the bridge and you can see the footings still there for the signal bridge. And panning to the left reveals the now closed to the public McAllen Rd crossing and the replacement UP signals. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/15/20 16:23 by ble692. Question: When 936 lights up, will 938 also light ? SZ Date: 11/15/20 21:04 Re: Signal Sunday, SP . . . Author: 3rdswitch Well, that explains that.
JB Date: 11/16/20 20:51 Re: Signal Sunday, SP . . . Author: ble692 Just had one more thought. At the time of the photograph the train would be railroad westbound, although geographically southbound.
