Nostalgia & History > Old Passenger Car's Forever Home In Tiburon on the NWP

Here we are at about milepost 8.1 on the NWP's Tiburon branch. The last train rolled through here on September 23, 1967 right after the rebuilt Puerto Suello tunnel in San Rafael was officially reopened. Across Tiburon Boulevard from the ROW is a house with an old passenger car with clerestory windows built into it. Recent tree work revealed the full profile of the roof of the car.

Not clear when the passenger car was moved here. A house is on this site in a 1946 aerial photograph but it doesn't appear to include the car. A 1965 aerial photo does clearly show the car.

Here's a detail of the end of the car. Also, a detail of a nearby culvert that was installed maybe in the 1930's. The state built the highway that today is called Tiburon Boulevard around 1927. An NWP valuation map shows redwood box culverts here after the highway had been built, so these pipe culverts must've been done later. The highway project provided an opportunity for the NWP to create a new auto ferry terminal at Tiburon, to be used by three new autoferries they had built that year. While the wharf was indeed built, ultimately it was only used for a matter of months, with auto traffic being routed through the Sausalito NWP terminal and later the SP's Golden Gate Ferries terminal, located on the other side of downtown from the NWP complex.

Someone posted a photo elsewhere of this car. On the other side of it it has the number 39 painted on it. So possibly it was SF & NP 39.
