Nostalgia & History > Fort Worth FridayDate: 11/20/20 04:12 Fort Worth Friday Author: PVSfan Big expectations for Ft. Worth in 1887 regarding railroad construction.
Most of the lines in the promotion map were built but not all. Can you pick out which ones were not? Date: 11/20/20 08:05 Re: Fort Worth Friday Author: 2-10-2 By 1880, Ft Worth's population was 6,663 and Dallas was already exceeding it at 10,358. Of course the mapmaker and real estate company wanted everyone to think Ft Worth was the center of NE Texas and hub of all railroads (in place or planned) in the region.
I'm going off educated guesses, but the lines west - Ft Worth and Western, and the Kansas Southern of Texas were never built. Going east, the "T L Ark & Tex" never made it, and the Mo Pac line coming from the north and heading south to Hillsboro ended up being the Katy. Anything with a "R. W." I assume is right of way, meaning it's either surveyed or graded. Really enjoying these unique posts! 2-10-2 Date: 11/20/20 09:44 Re: Fort Worth Friday Author: 41 Let me guess---the lines w/the "spikes" are the ones that were not built.

On many old maps from this time period, the "lines with spikes" stood for narrow gauge railroads. Are the "lines with spikes" on this map narrow gauge? Date: 11/20/20 18:30 Re: Fort Worth Friday Author: PVSfan Lines with spikes on this map were projected lines in 1887 not narrow gauge lines. Some were built; some were not.
Lines not built into Ft. Worth: Ft. Worth Western (not to be confused with current railroad by that name) Kansas Southern of Texas St. Louis & San Francisco ( no trackage to Ft. Worth except later trackage rights on Cotton Belt and Rock Island) Ft. Worth & South Eastern (?) Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe ( this line was built north of Ft. Worth as Gulf Colorado & Santa Fe) Lines built: Missouri Pacific (actually the Katy) St. Louis, Arkansas & Texas (Cotton Belt) all others not mentioned Edited 1 time(s).
