The NS Merger Was Starting to Show - 1983
Author: krm152

During a photo stop at Southern’s Ludlow, KY Engine Terminal on Nov 22, 1983, a number of N&W units were present. I thought this was a pretty good indication that the NS merger was beginning to have am impact. My favorite one of the N&W units present was GP9 #697 shown in the posted photo. Even though the paint scheme was simple, I thought it was appropriate for a big coal hauler like the N&W was back then.

I agree about the paint scheme.

I really like that paint scheme. Simple, brutish.

If I recall correctly, N&W paid a half-million dollars to the design firm that came up with the scrunched NW logo.  I was appalled both by the design and the price tag, and suggested to myself that I could have done the same with a piece of Presstype (remember that?).  Heck, I'd have only charged the N&W $250,000. What a deal.

About the easiest paint scheme to custom paint a model, save for the yellow handrail accents.

Never did like the solid one color paint scheme on diesels, MOP included.
