Nostalgia & History > The NS Merger Was Starting to Show - 1983Date: 11/21/20 01:02 The NS Merger Was Starting to Show - 1983 Author: krm152 During a photo stop at Southern’s Ludlow, KY Engine Terminal on Nov 22, 1983, a number of N&W units were present. I thought this was a pretty good indication that the NS merger was beginning to have am impact. My favorite one of the N&W units present was GP9 #697 shown in the posted photo. Even though the paint scheme was simple, I thought it was appropriate for a big coal hauler like the N&W was back then.

I was appalled both by the design and the price tag, and suggested to myself that I could have done the same with a piece of Presstype (remember that?). Heck, I'd have only charged the N&W $250,000. What a deal.
