Nostalgia & History > Early Vermont RY Part 2Date: 11/26/20 09:29 Early Vermont RY Part 2 Author: briancdn Here's a sampling of VTR motive power in the late 70's. Colorful and well maintained power was normal around the Burlington and Rutland shops.
1) Alco S-4 #6 looks great in this July 4th 1978 roster shot. An ex C&O unit, always well maintained. Ended up at a power plant in Missouri. Inactive. 2) SW1500 501 was purchased new. Only this unit and two GP38-2's were purchased new. 3) RS-3 606 was the last RS-3 overhauled by VTR. It was actually rebuilt from a wreck damaged unit (602) that had hit a snowplow. Originally Lehigh & Hudson River. Photographed at Burlington 1n 1980. Sold to Spencerville and Elgin in Ohio, scrapped in 2004. Brian N. Edited 4 time(s). Last edit at 11/26/20 10:00 by briancdn. Were reefer loads inbound or outbound from the Vermont Ry.? How busy overall was the railroad?? Date: 11/26/20 19:11 Re: Early Vermont RY Part 2 Author: DavidP I lived in Manchester, VT during the winter of 1980-81, and recall the 501 powering the North Bennington turn through town.
