I don't know the particulars of that accident, but it may have been that the car was thrown into a facing point switch causing the points to gap. That happened on the WP at Hammer Lane in Stockton, and I believe that's what happened to the SP 2479 (now being restored in San Jose) at Selma, CA back about 1941. I agree 100% on that one, that observer sure did assume which if reported was shot down in a heartbeat! BTW South Pacific, that person doesn't know railroad names either!
