I Really Like Portland, Oregon Union Station
Author: MartyBernard

It's the right size to wrap your brain around.  Not to big, but large enough to have lot's of interesting detail.  It has a marvelous tower and a neat restaurant.

1.  Here is a 1918 shot, source unknown.  Portland Union Station was opened in 1898.

2. I took this shot in 2008.  The near round part with the awnings is Wilf's Restaurant & Bar.

3. A 1993 shot.

4. In 1981

5. SP SD9 4302, SD9 4434, GP9 3873, GP9 3846, and SD9 4382 pass the Station on June 20, 1993.

6. AMTK P42DC 83 with Train 1011 on May 5, 2008.  Remember when SP had that landslide near Oakridge, OR and Amtrak ran the Coast Starlight in two parts.  The south part from Klamath Falls down and the north part from Eugene, OR up.  This is the southbound north part.  Construction to the left is for a Light Rail station.

10.  Amtrak Ticket Counter and Train Board on May 5, 2008.  Note the train numbers on the Coast Starlights.

What a great depot, and I also like that classy little brick tower down there to the left of the end of the platforms (in the shot looking down the tracks at the depot).

credit to TriMet for preserving the exterior of the interlocking tower when they reused the interior.....somewhere I have pictures of the interior before we pulled out the controls that are somewhere in Pacific NW Chapter, NRHS storage.  great pictures Marty....yes, a neat building...wish we would get that clock tower stablized before our next seismic event...also the chimney on the annex.   the Go By Train phrase has been re-used by many.....Go By Bike, Go by Cab, Go by Carr (sells cars), Go By Tram, Go By Streetcar, etc  Arlen
