Nostalgia & History > Lake Shore Limited 45 Years AgoDate: 11/28/20 11:16 Lake Shore Limited 45 Years Ago Author: PCCRNSEngr November 28, 1975 I was riding the Lake Shore Limited #49 from Syracuse to Chicago. Here at the station stop in Elkhart, IN with SDP40F 596. Doing a circle trip from Syracuse to Chicago, then a ride on the new French Turboliner to Detroit. A short overnight in Detroit and returning to Syracuse on the Niagara Rainbow.

The Lake Shore had only been back in business for about a month at that time. Amtrak's initial practice was to run a single SDP40F Boston to Chicago. By the summer of 1976, single E units had taken over 448/449, and the combined train west of Albany was getting two 3000HP units, either SDPs, P30CHs, or one of each. So if I understand correctly, the Lake Shore Limited was stopped long enough for you to get off the train, go to the front to get the photo and get back on? Interesting, I didn't realize the Lake Shore Limited stopped long enough in Elkhart for anyone to get such a photo. Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy seeing SDP40F photographs.
