When does a RR cease to exist
Author: misty1

Chased some old ROW from Morris Iowa to Oasis Iowa the other day this is what I found. Hope you enjoy what is left of the old CRI&P. Even found a few old telegraph poles left. I believe this line was abandon sometime early 20th century.

Nice and interesting series! You never know what you might find on old abandoned ROW's.

The little burg is Morse, not Morris.  :-)

Ed, the line you're showing was RI's former BCR&N main line from Manly to Burlington, abandoned in 1980 when RI shut down; torn up circa 1985.  The lines east (to Clinton and Davenport) and west (to Iowa City) of Elmira were abandoned in the 1930s or so.  Portions of those lines are still visible in places, and surprisingly, BCR&N's Iowa City roundhouse still exists as a blood bank on Gilbert St. where it crosses Ralson Creek.  Still looks like a roundhouse too!

That bridge in picture 1 looks like it will be there for quite a while.

Many railroad structures, especially bridges, have plate or badge markings on them from the US Geodesic Service.  These markers were originally intended as reference points for surveyors and engineers.  Lately they've become elements in real life player geo-catching games where organizers leave treats, and participants pick them up, and leave new / different treats.  The former Lackawanna Railroad lines in northwestern NJ have featured in several episodes.

Nice series Ed. It's always easy to see abandoned ROW around grain elevators but going out in the pucker brush is another thing. Well done!

The RED colored letters in your lines is hard to read and the Green is worse yet. Find a better color. upkpfan
