Nostalgia & History > UP A-B-B-B at Dale Jct.Date: 01/02/21 10:20 UP A-B-B-B at Dale Jct. Author: bobdavis Not a set of E units, but this A-B-B-B SD40-DD35B-GP30B-GP30B combo was still possible on the UP in 1976. The pic shows the westbound WPM (Western Pacific Manifest) coming off the new line at Dale on July 15, 1976 as Amtrak train 6, the eastbound San Francisco Zephyr, heads east on the "old line". Back then there was rarely a problem driving in to the junction and climbing up on the rocks for photos. The main issue could be the wind. Dale was one place where you could have a wind chill factor at 2pm in the middle of July!

Along with maybe a hundred or so other fans and the three friends I was traveling with, I was lucky enough to shoot the Big Boy from a location just to the right of the hill in the middle of the scene. The local rancher opened their property at that location the day the Big Boy headed west out of Cheyenne towards Ogden and the celebration of the Golden Spike Sesquicentennial, on May 4, 2019. It was a thrill to see the Big Boy at that location. https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,5015652,5015652#msg-5015652 How neat it is to now see that location from this perspective in this image! Thanks for the neat view, and the fine image! MC Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 01/02/21 11:36 by ironmtn. Date: 01/02/21 18:05 Re: UP A-B-B-B at Dale Jct. Author: SCKP187 Great photo. Really appreciated this kind of power and miss it very much.
