Following up on the posts of the last few days - here are some photos of the Washington DC section of the Broadway Limited.

1)  Westbound Broadway Ltd Wash DC section leaving Washington at Ivy City in Washington, behind a PC E-8 in March 1973.
2)  Going-away shot of same. 
3)  Eastbound Wash DC section approaching Ivy City behind a GG1 in March 1974.

Great pictures! Thank you for sharing. Did this train go to Harrisburg via Perrvile, MD or did it go all the way to Philadelphia to connect with the New York section of the Broadway Limited?

Ran via York/ northern central back in the 60's.  IDK when it was changed to Port Road/Perryville.  Maybe 1972 after Hurricane agnes, which is when i thionk the Northern Central  was broken  as a thru route. to Baltimore.
As for it changing to Phila routing. I think that happened, but IDK.  Sounds like something that would have happened when the National Ltd was offed, and engines changes at HAR discontinied.

Im jusrt guessing.  Someone else will know for sure...

The Penn Central ran a Baltimore - Harrisburg train via York up until Amtrak day (i.e. through April 30, 1971).  This was a remnent of the old Buffalo Day Express, not necessarily a connection to east-west trains.  On May 1, 1971, Amtrak kicked off the combined Broadway/Spirit of St. Louis connection from Washington to Harrisburg via the Columbia and Port Deposit branch, carrying through cars for both trains.  Advantages of the new route were that electric power could be used, and no change of direction was required at Baltimore.  Subsequently the connection to the renamed National Limited was downgraded to a separate tri-weekly coach-only train, then dropped altogether.  The Broadway connection was then rerouted via Philadelphia, providing 30th St Station with direct Chicago service for the first time in the Amtrak era.  This remained the norm through the seventies, until the Capitol Limited was revived as the DC connection to the Broadway.

The Washington section of the Broadway Limited operated on the Columbia & Port Deposit line until November 30, 1975 when it was rereouted via Philadelphia.  Upon initiation of service in October 1981, the Capitol Limited replaced the Washington section of the Broadway Limited.   

The Washington section of the National Limited operated on the Columbia & Port Deposit line until October 28, 1978 when the Washington section separated from and joined the New York section in Philadelphia instead of Harrisburg.  This arrangement lasted until the discontinuance of the National Limited a year later. 

Nice shots!  Old Penn Central RR Washington, DC or the Harrisburg, PA passenger train  and electric engine crews worked between Washington, DC and Harrisburg. PA via the Columbia and Port Deposit Branch aka Port Road Branch between Harrisburg and Perryville, MD.

The second photo shows a former New York Central "Stream" series 6 double bedroom, buffet-lounge on the rear.  During the few years that the Washington section of the Broadway operated,  sleeper-lounges of differing ancestries served on the train, including former B&O Capitol Limited/Ambassador 5 double bedroom, buffet lounge observations, and the former Nickel Plate 5 double bedroom buffet lounges.

The linked photo shows the train turning onto the Port Road at Perryville, Maryland, with one of the former Nickel Plate cars holding down the sleeper-lounge assignment (third car in the consist).
