In the early 80s at Omaha shops was UP 968b waiting shop time. This is the front end veiw but I don,t know if the hostlers controls are on this end or the other?  Anyone know?

Didn't B units have hostler controls. If so, they would be in the F end.

SP’s ALCo PB’s even had a horn on the roof. I think their EMD E units had a had horns on the B’s too, but it was on the end bulkhead beside the end door.

Very neat photo....thanks for sharing. Interesting...I've always heard about controls on B units, even the GP-60B's we still have in service on the BN....but...never seen the "hostler" controls in them. Does anybody have a picture by chance?

Sadly, 968B was retired in 1980 and scrapped by 1981, along with the other 3 "B" units UP had kept for passenger protection and business trains, and two of the 4 "A" units. (951 was saved, and 928 was gutted and sent to a museum.) Less than 10 years later when UP wanted a "B" unit for their restored E-unit trio, they had to start with one that was in much worse condition than the ones they scrapped.

The hostler controls are on the engineers (right side) at the first port hole with hinges so it can be opened up and he can stick his head out. I have a photo of a F7B controls. Ill look for it.

If it had hostler controls the wwould be in the "F" end. Being a locomotive which can move on its own it then must have a horn and bell. Note - Not all B units have hostler controls.

Correct, as Hostler Control" was, I believe, an option and thus an extra charge. Thus, not all B-Units of any type, were equipped with Hostler Controls.

Indeed.  What they started with was a B-unit that had been gutted and outfitted for use as a steam generator car for Amtrak.

Indeed, I have slides of the 968B , gutted, waiting to be cut up labeled 6/81 at PNC Mt.Vernon when the late Burlington John and I took a tour of the shop.

The UP B-units that Amtrak sent to the Florida pool didn't have hostler controls.  We looked for it and would have used it around the Hamlet Diesel Shop.  We often used the hostler controls on our SCL E7-B's
