Riding SOO's Winnipeger in June 1966
Author: BNSF-6432

After acquiring a new scanner over the holidays I've began rescanning my father's and Frank Tribbey's images. The first box I touched from Frank Tribbey was of a ride on SOO Line's mostly overnight Winnipeger. Thankfully he rode during the summer time, providing some evening light to shoot the Manitoba prairie from a standard weight.

1) Looking ahead down the coach in the countryside south of Winnipeg.

2) Looking down at the shadow of the rear car.

3) A look back north at the mainline and a small farmer's crossing.

More to come...

4) Likely the conductor down of the platform of the small depot at Niverville, MB

5) A convenient store conveniently placed by the slightly larger depot of Otterburne, MB

6) A small group of passengers that ended the journey in Otterburne.

7) Noticing Frank and his camera, the small group waves as the train continues on into the evening around 19:30, if on time.

8) A pair of boxcars at a grain elevator, location unknown.

9) A trackside farmhouse in the same town.

10) Now a look at the unidentified two story station stop in the same town with the dog of the depot watching the train take off.

11) The final view of the day as the sun sets under the flat Manitoba prairie.

12) After the overnight ride into the US, we wake up the next day to a freight passing by as the train makes it's way into Minneapolis

13) Getting a look at the short consist rounding a curve into the city.

14) Another look at the 3 car train and amount of tracks coming into Minneapolis.

15) A look at MILW S-12 Baldwin 909 assigned to switching.

16) Frank returns to shooting from the ground after the Winnipeger has deboarded at the Milwaukee Road owned Minneapolis depot in the morning hours beside a clean MILW F unit leading a passenger train also at the platform.

17) The Winnipeger departs again for the last jaunt to the St Paul Union Depot.

You may have a new scanner, but you post like an old pro! Beautiful images need first-class scans such as these.

Great post all around.  That second to last shot next to the MILW FP7 is super.

When looking at photos from this era, I am always amazed at how neat and clean the ROW, station platforms and surrounding areas are, There is no trash, tall weeds or graffiti anywhere.

Wonderful pictures - thanks for posting them.  And a great job of scanning.

Was Frank on a sleeper or was it only coaches?

I love the picture at Minneapolis with what is probably the Milwaukee Road's Morning Hiawatha (I'm guessing since I don't have my timetables handy).

Labor was cheap then, they had section gangs who took great pride in their work.
Those days are long gone in the everlasting quest to cut costs.

NP wood bay window.  Great shots of an obscure run.  What route did the SOO passenger trains from Glenwood take to get to the MILW station in Minneapolis?  BSB
