Nostalgia & History > question for Long Island RR folks

I thought the FA's on LI were just controll cars, no prime mover. In ths shot at Huntington, NY 7-29-73, there seemes to be exhaust as if
a normally operating locomotive. Any info?

The HEP in the power cars often threw out some smoke to make it look like it had a prime mover.   This was less prevalent after the original HEP engines were replaced by Detroit Diesel HEP sleds.  More info here  http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/lirrFA/lirrFA.htm

Thanks for the info. I should of guessed they had a small HEP unit. Not enough smoke to be Alco anyway.

600 - 604 always retained the Alco 244 engine  and all survive to this day. Former 602 has been restored to an operational locomotive.

So it was, and still is, a REAL FA!  Super. At some point it would be fantistic to see ithe 602 reborn. Great work.

No traction motors  - the 244 drove the standard generator to provide elactricity to the train.

Kinda like a vasectomy. Most of the main parts are there, but connections have been severed.
