Twilight of the CR 80MACs
Author: jgilmore

Just after NS took over, I was at South Fork while two pairs of CR SD80MACs still in original paint were waiting for a crew to take a loaded coal train out onto the mainline... JG

Great shots and great colors!  Those sure were neat engines.

They were great to see, even when all NS black and dirty.  The West Slope
lost some of its "charm" when these were retired last year (along with the numerous
other changes on that piece of railroad.)

After the split of Conrail, the SD80MACs were split up between the Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX Transportation. Norfolk Southern received 17 units (numbered 7200–7216) while CSX got 13 (800–812, being renumbered to 4590–4602). The former Conrail units were the first AC traction locomotives owned by Norfolk Southern, with the railroad not ordering more until late 2008 with an order of General Electric's ES44AC.

Oh man, that blue looks so good there compared to the NS black that took over.  My only railfan trips to PA and NY were in the 90s, so I only saw the Conrail era.

Nice. Pretty good bet that train would have one set of Macs up front and another on the rear, so that might explain the setup here.

Csx would later go on to trade their batch to NS in exchange for SD40-2's, which CSX in turn sent for rebuild into the spongebob square cab sd40-3's
