On Hands and Knees
Author: MacBeau

Back in the Summer 1990 this quartet of westbound B40-8s was recorded climbing the last mile into Summit past Martinez Spur on Cajon Pass. There was not enough tape available to record the whole train. Offered then are the last two plus minutes of the seven it took for them to pass the camera.

Be of good cheer,
—Mac

Excellent video.  Sure is neat to hear all those units working to lift the train over the hill.

They did, but had to sit there and watch a couple of hot piggybacks get run around them. A light helper team went east as they were departing Summit as I recall.

I've heard those units had a pretty high minimum continuous speed.  Would they have been in short-time-rating territory at the speed they were moving there?  Or would the computer de-rate them before they started melting down?

With all the units sporting "Desert Storm" flags, the date would be 1991 or later.

Spring 92, clips off the same tape are from that time frame.

While an avid EMD fan, great capture of two competing forces

Great video of the good old days. That sound is awesome. I wonder how today’s units would have done with the same train. Would that mean average train speeds have increased climbing the pass?

That's what makes railfanning so much fun is scenes like this, I can recall at Silverwood where the South and North Tracks meet my friend Mark and I saw a Eastbound BNSF Freight doing the same speed heading up South Track (now Main 3) and man talk about slugging it out!
