The long cars carried wings, didn't they?
Dunno what's in the short ones. Was it
Rohr that built the wings?

Interesting design, had not seen that set before. Looks like the two end cars overhang the center car, assuming normal couplers on everything. Also the paint scheme is interesting, not the common freight car brown that we see these days.

Each 3 car set carried a pair of wings, made in Georgia (?) and delivered to Palmdale for final assembly.
They rode leading edge down, and the floor of the car was down at the bottom of the clearance envelope in order to get the height needed for the chord of the wing.
I heard one SP mechanical officer say that at some point a drawbar came out of a car ahead of a Lockheed car set and it tumbled under the floor of the car, denting the leading edge of the wing, leading to one of the largest freight damage claims ever, the pair of wings was scrap aluminum.
Great image, thanks for sharing.

The plant Lockheed California built just assemble the L-1011 still exists. The siding off of the SP is still there too. Still goes into the building.
It's now occupied by Lockheed Advanced Products Division, aka the Skunk Works.
Lockheed moved their Lockheed Burbank operation to Palmdale when it became appearant the L-1011 wasn't going to be a big seller.

Nice photo!

Did you get any photos of the complete 3 car set?

It would be an interesting model to build!

Yes...plus the cars were on the head end for an easy set out at Denis siding to the plant.
