Nostalgia & History > SP Tracy October 1974Date: 01/15/21 11:08 SP Tracy October 1974 Author: ssloansjca 1- Southern Pacific (SP) RS32 4003 sits in the power pool waiting for work in Tracy, CA on Sunday, October 6, 1974. SP 4003 is an ALCo RS32/DL721. According to good sources, including Strapac's fantastic SP Compendium series, SP 4003 was built in April 1962 as an ALCo RS32/DL-721, builders number 84028, SP 7303, SP Class DF-618. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 4003, SP Class AF420-1. This locomotive was changed to SP Class AS420-1 in March 1975. The disposition of this locomotive is: retired in 1977 and sold 1978. Leased to C&NW. Reportedly ex-SP 4003 went to Fundidora Monterrey (FM) in 1980 shipped as CC 1002. Other roadnames and numbers reported to be associated with this locomotive include, CCLX 4003, FM 4003.
2- Southern Pacific (SP) SD7 1411 at Tracy, CA in a variation of SP's red and gray paint on Sunday, October 6, 1974. According to good sources, including Strapac's fantastic SP Compendium series, SP 1411 was built in 1953 by EMD as a model SD7, builders number 17153, SP 5290, SP Class DF-114. In 1965 it was recategorized as a switcher and renumbered to SP 2711 SP Class ES615-1. In 1974 it became SP 1411 EMD SD7, SP Class ES615-1. This locomotive was upgraded in 1980 emerging as SD7R SP 1534 SP Class ES615R-1. The disposition of this locomotive is: retired in 1997 and sold in 1999. Presumed scrapped. I hope you like these. Well...... the 1411 is classified as a switch engine and the paint scheme for switch engines does call for a red side sill from stepwell to stepwell... I photographed 1411 in Tracy during March 1976, and it didn't have the red frame stripe. However, the gray paint on the frame looked newer than the gray on the rest of the unit.
