Signal Sunday, UP . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   sixteen years ago, a southbound UP train was passing under, MAYBE, the most photographed signal bridge in California, at MP 377 on UP's former SP Mojave Sub a few miles north of the town of Mojave. Today, this old signal bridge in no more.

Nice shot of a favorite prop. Interesting consist, too. The G plates seem to be all gone now too, I guess unecessary since most signals with number plates can be passed at restricted spped now, as I understand it.

I think todays new signals are wired to give a flashing red. Unless there are special instructions in effect, or, you have track and time, or you are in ABS TWC with work between, or G or P on signal mast, you cannot pass a solid red without stopping. Of course, it's now been eleven years since I have had to read a rule book or special instructions.

On the UP the Fuel Conservation people got involved sometime in 2007 or 2008 and changed a red intermediate signal from a "Stop and Proceed" signal to a "Restricted Proceed" signal. Now the signal may be passed without stopping at restricted speed.

Also noteworthy in the picture is the 2nd unit, UPY 2004. As a Railpower Green Goat demonstrator, it spent a rather short and unsuccessful career on the UP from 2005 to 2007.

Not being a follower of recent trends, I was wondering what that curiosity in the consist was.  Thanks for the info.
