The Loop at 16th Street Station Oakland
Author: phthithu

At one time there was a loop on the Wood St. side of SP's 16th Street station in Oakland. I know it was used by SP dinky's but was it ever used by the larger electric "red car" trains that would run to Oakland Pier? The loop track comes off the 18th St-Dutton Avenue route for the red cars. I don't know which streetcar lines served the station, mainly interested in the red cars.

I found a couple comments in threads at another site saying the larger red cars did use the loop. But no details as to when.

Thanks if you have any thoughts on this matter.

No reason to think the red electrics ever ran on 18th St.
Doubt red cars could traverse a curve of ...
maybe 80 ft radius.

TimZ I haven't read the books--just the wikipedia page--but what about 18th St-Dutton Ave line? There was a ramp at the station took the line up to the elevated electric platform and thence to the Oakland Pier.

Rantoul, interesting that the loop has been removed in one of your plats and that it doesn't show the connection from 18th St trackage heading east to electric 6. You can see that connection in 1931 detail above.

Yeah, I spoke too quick. Dunno how long
anything used that ramp from 18th St to the
upper level.

Still doubt that a full-size car could cope
with the loop.

Here's the post where it was mentioned. This is the main one I found saying that...I agree seems pretty tight for the larger red cars as opposed to the smaller dinkys, which I don't know much about however.
