They were built on SD35 frames, hence without the signature SD40 porch. Here are images of the UP 3040,47, 46,41 lash-up at East Yard, Los Angeles on 4/6/66.

The spaces were increased a bit for the SD40s, and even more for the SD40-2s, making the later units much easier to work on.
