Nostalgia & History > UP SD40s at the beginningDate: 02/22/21 05:31 UP SD40s at the beginning Author: masterphots UP purchased the EMD SD40 test beds Nos. 434A-H, which were used to test the 645 engine. They were built on SD35 frames, hence without the signature SD40 porch. Here are images of the UP 3040,47, 46,41 lash-up at East Yard, Los Angeles on 4/6/66.

It ultimately became HLCX 6399 and was scrapped in 2010. Date: 02/22/21 16:06 Re: UP SD40s at the beginning Author: RoadForeman The first six got flares, the 3046-3047 didn't.

To quantify, SD35 was 5' shorter than SD40. Thanks for the great photo posting. ALLEN Date: 02/23/21 04:56 Re: UP SD40s at the beginning Author: donstrack Here is some history to go along with Masterphot's great photos.
https://utahrails.net/up/up-diesel-story-1934-1982.php#sd40-demo I worked on these units many, many times in the 1970s, and they had very tight spaces between components. The spaces were increased a bit for the SD40s, and even more for the SD40-2s, making the later units much easier to work on. Aye, aye capn'! Certainly one of my favorites. Today, one of the FEW things you can be depended on Uncle Pete for is that a desecrated flag will come rolling along real soon... |
