C&O 614 Forty years ago Today

C&O 614 Forty years ago Today (Feb 22, 1981) sitting at Tampa Union Station in beautiful morning sun.  614 was supposed to pull an excursion train this morning but something happened to it (I don't remember what) from Tampa to somewhere in Florida (I don't remember that either).
It wasn't too serious, but not a quick fix as it went over to West Palm Beach the next weekend and ran a couple trips between WPB and Miami.

I'm so used to seeing "Chessie System Safety Express" that "Family Lines Safety Express" is a surprise.

What’s SLCA on the sand dome? Was this shortly after CSX was formed? What is the story with Family Lines on the tender? I don’t recall ever hearing of 614 involved with SBD.

Steam Locomotive Corporation of America - I think this was Ross Rowland's company that owned the engine.

Yes

CSX was originally formed as a holding company, not intended to be a brand name.  That strategy was changed after a couple of years, but in 1981 Family Lines was still the brand name used for what would soon become Seaboard System.

I can't remember the details of why it was sidelined, but this was the Sunday trip where it was to pull a round trip to Dunnellon, Florida via Plant City on the SCL West Coast Subdivision.  Diesels did the honor on this days trip.  My father and I rode the previous day round trip to Dunnellon.  A wonderful memory and coming back we were late and she really put on a show with her high stepping to get us home and make up some time.

Possibly the next weekend it ran from Orlando to Palatks and back. My dad, wife and I went and spent the night in Orlando and rode the trip to Palatka and back to Orlando.

Why it was sidelined- explained on the Steam & Excursion section.
