Another one for FiftyFooter
Author: roustabout

I caught this odd boxcar in SP's Eugene Yard in 1977 and I have no other information on it.  You old heads came chime in if you wish.

Very nice catch.  End-door boxcars were practically extinct in 1977.
Thanks for the posting.

Some railroads use them to haul autos.

Nice! Looks like EssPee painted and likely re-trucked that box. I doubt it had much more of a life after your photo.

First one I have seen that was a combo door box. Even has hydra cushion on it. Newer car with an old feature.

From Lee Gautreaux's Railgoat site:

These 50'-6" box cars were built by AC&F in 1962 and featured a combination of 8'-0" Youngstown sliding and plug doors, Hydra-Cushion underframes, Car Pac loaders and 4644 ft3 capacity. Several cars (SP 663053, 663057, 663058 , 663083 & 663087) were known to have been equipped with end doors. This is 663087.

SSW had a hundred cars too.
