A Short Incline

While passing through Nampa, ID back in June 1940, FSA photographer Russell Lee snapped this frame of the Oregon Short Line's coaling tower showing the rollers for the wire rope between the rails. This is the first of these I can recall seeing with this feature.

I can't recall seeing those rollers either. The boxcars/reefers on the right really look old.

The cable winch would slow the car and keep it under control.

I wonder how many idlers they had to use to 'reach' the top?

Notice the split rail derail at the bottom to make sure nothing get's away.

The winch pulled some sort of dummy
that shoved the car up the climb?
There had to be something at the top
end of the car to keep the cable near
rail level, underneath the car?
