SP SD45T-2s mid 70s
Author: ssloansjca

1 & 2 - SP 9237 an SD45T-2 on the point of an oil train at Ozol yard in Martinez, CA. Date not recorded mid 1970s. Likely 1973.
Allen said on Train Orders, "Chevron oil train from Utah. As Wes said it's going to their refinery in Richmond. Started running mainly because of the Arab Oil Embargo...the refinery could not receive enough imported crude oil for processing. It was such a success it lasted until the late '80's from what I recall. The UP and Santa Fe handled these trains at the end. I remember seeing one in Feather River Canyon (with no camera)."
WAF (Wes) said, "By the end of the 70s, the oil train was only running like once a week."
According to good sources, including Strapac's fantastic SP Compendium series, SP 9237 was built in 1972 by EMD as a model SD45T-2, SP 9237, SP Class EF636-8, builder's number 72601-29.
This locomotive was upgraded in 1988 emerging as SP 6867 SP Class EF636LR-8.
The disposition of this locomotive is: sold to Helm 1995 as Helm 938. Rebuilt to an SD40-3 and sold to DM&IR 405 in 1996.

2- Southern Pacific SD45T-2 is climbing westbound toward Truckee, CA with SD45 8920, an SD40 and another SD45T-2 on July 20, 1975. JS said, "That shot on Donner is the old station site of Boca, CA." WAF said, "(The) one at Boca on Donner is the RGRVY. The block of coiled steel on the head end is the giveaway."
According to good sources, including Strapac's fantastic SP Compendium series, SP 9320 was built in Jan. 1974 by EMD as a model SD45T-2, builders number 73630-06, SP 9320 EMD SD45T-2, SP Class EF636-12.
This locomotive was upgraded in April 1988 emerging as SP 6836 SP Class EF636R-8.
The disposition of this locomotive is, renumbered out of original SP sequence; rebuilt to 3000 hp SD40-2T by VMV in 1998-1999; renumbered to UP 4820, then UP 2852. Retired by UP in June 2008.
