Did any (AS-16 and DRS-4-4-1500) venture west of Marion, Ohio, particularly in their early careers?

Yes, only on rare occasions. They would handle some local work going to Kenton when the RS3's were busy or the other local power was out working. Joe Slanser, may he R.I.P,  a master Erie & EL modeler and fan mentioned this to me when we would talk Erie & EL. He lived in Marion his whole life. I don't believe the Baldwin's were based out of Marion, may have been shopped there.

They also ended up on the Bangor & Portland (cement region) lines in Pennsylvania for a short while.
