SP Visitor to the NWP during the 86 Flooding
Author: spider1319

These images were taken in March of 1986 when the North Bay experienced an unusual amount of winter rainfall. The eastbound sprint or hauler is seen just south of Schellville surrouded by water. The 4800 class power lasted a short time being assigned to Petaluma which was different from the usual SD9,GP9 and SW1500.Bill Webb

It's amazing how fast traffic off the NWP dried up.   Was that a common length of train at the time?

Nice shots, Thanks for posting.
In the late 70s, Very early 80s it was common to see 3-5 long (80-100 cars) freight trains on a Friday or Saturday night.
Mostly with big power & then the SD9s came back.

Didn't SP impose a surcharge on loads coming off the north end of the NWP around 1983-84?  That pretty much put the kabash on the big trains originating off the NWP.

The NWP Redwood Line built the Bay and souranding areas! They even had Ferry Boats back in the day to shuffle lumber cars! It was amazing how much lumber they pumped out of there in the 70s and 80s!

The NWP also handled alot of gravel, perishable and feed business through the 80s.

Looks like the Eureka Southern was out of service, probably due to slides. This is traffic generated on the south end
