Nice for modelers.  I've seen many photos of single F-units on passenger trains (as well as seen a few in person), but never on freight trains.

What was the regular run of the Truckee Local?
Did it originate at Sparks and return there or did it operate through to Roseville, or ???
Thanks In Advance

F units made terrible switch engines.  Obviously they were designed for forward operation only and very minimal backing up.  I'm glad the only backing up I had to do with one was while hostling at the SJRH.

Came out of Sparks cabhop with an F in the beginning. Switched the mill in Truckee and went back to Sparks. Later in the 70s, it came out of Roseville with Geeps or SD9s

Any idea why an F? Surely it’s “limitations” were obvious. Maybe that’s all that was available in Sparks in those days? Or some other, not obvious, reason?
If F’s were regular on the job then it implies someone made a deliberate decision.
Thanks

Probably back in the day, mid 60s and before, that was what was laying around to use as you said. Geeps were rare as helpers back then
