Rails are shiney because they were running on it, just not more than 5 mph.

A great example of modern  VGT line, that's Variable Guage Track.

What's even scarier, at certain times of the year that line was actually busy!

Not a good candidate for hi-cube covered hoppers RE:rockoff. What i would call "weed and feed" track. We used to see track like this in some industries in the B&O Baltimore Terminal back in the 1960-70s.

Had friends back in my school days at Idaho who worked on the Nezperce during the summer, generally on track maintenance.  Most lived in the nearby small towns; Nezperce, Kooskia, and Kamiah come to mind.  Heard lots of interesting stories from their time working for the RR.

Looks like they had more than enough to keep them busy!   They better attend to those joints and ties in the picture which look like they're going down the embankmentl at any moment.

Just remember, as long as the 'wowing' is in the same direction at the same location, you might have to slow down, but you're OK.
When they're not....look out!!

You will note that the motive power had about the same wheelbase as a Prius!

So are the rails lying in the gauge the new ones, the old ones, or guard rails for the kink, pending installation?

At 10 mph or less, you'd be amazed at what lousy track can handle.
