Bruce took this on 9/3/73, noted as Newcomb, MT. Appears that pans are down on boxcabs.

Westbound decending the west slope of Pipestone Pass. Has passed the substation at Janney (Jane-e) and is approaching the east siding switch Newcomb. This would have been a fairly easy spot for Bruce to get to. Might be the boxcab set that was struck by lightning, working as a helper on an eb, near Donald several weeks earlier. Rob will probably know for sure.

A true Bruce Montana classic!  The guy breathed this railroad.

Link to the modern day view.  The house that is there now would have been a nice location for a railfan to have lived.

'Looks like rail service still reaches Newcomb, just down the hill a bit.  Definitely nostalgic.

Yes, the Butte Helper job had just been abolished and the crippled E45 set was being hauled to Deer Lodge. Did not run as a 3-unit set again.

Best regards,

This location was originally built as a wooden trestle before it was filled in shortly after the line was built. That seemed to be the way the Milwaukee did things as they built west. Build it as a wooden trestle and either fill it in or replace it with a steel trestle shortly after.

You are exactly right. Unless you see them next to a conventional cab D/E unit you don't realize how long they were. Great pic of my favorite railroad.
