No other place to put it since the FT's were not equiped with nose MU connections.

The WP got their nickle's worth out of their FT's. Most of them went back to EMD when they were traded in under their own power.

Another myth. A few were modified like the F7s were with the external conections. 2 units, 1 FTA and 1 F7A were modified with the EMD kit which included the door like on the passenger Units. Atleast one FTA got the external receptical that a lot of the F7As received. 2 reasons we didnt see more FTs modified were the FTs had a different MU pin count plug than the rest of the fleet accept the F3s. Im assuming thats why we see the second Square plug on most units up until the 1970 order of GP40s. By the 70s we see the square plug and air sanding lines being removed.
You'll notice nose MU, sanding line as well as MU hoses.

The third unit is WP's only "freight" F3 unit (#925A?), leased from the Sacramento Northern for a number of years.

Well, not really. The unit you are refering to was ex NYO&W F3A  #801D. WP bought it for SN and was to be 303, but WP did think they needed it and leased it back to itself. It Was numbered into the F3 passenger numbers and painted intoa passenger paint job. It did get used in Zephyr service atleast once. F3A 801 and 802 were also standby power of the CZ and kept close to Oroville for protection once WP terminated its secondary passenger service. In 68 ex NYO&W 801D was renumbered 926A and swapped out trucks for 62:15 freight gearded trucks along with 801A and 801D and put into freight service. F3A # 801A was renumbered to 925A and 802A was renumbered to 925D.

The "second square plug" above the regular MU receptacle was the field loop connector for units equipped with dynamic braking.  EMD eventually abandoned that system, but some roads continued to order power with the receptacles so they could control the dynamics on older units.

Do you recall which F7 had the passenger unit style door? I never noticed that one.

Here's the 926A eight months before being traded into EMD for a GP40.  Stockton,  2/15/70

Thanks masterphots for the great photo. It just goes to show that when we think we know a lot on a subject, we don't know everything. In the photo of 926A , I noticed just in front of the speed recorder there is a guard. I had never noticed this on anything. So I went and searched it out and the only units that had this feature were the 3 Ex NYO&W units. That's why I love this site, the learning never ends.

It's funny but when I took these photos I seldom noticed anything other than the number and maybe which paint scheme they had.  But  50-60 years later I look and continue to notice new things,  as you did with the speed recorder shield.  Speaking of which I wondered what the cable was for when I noticed it.   In looking at my shots of SN F3 301A and 301D (both former NYOW),  taken over the period 1961-68,  the 301A doesn't have the guard,  but 301D does.  Great fun digging into a Logan to check out these things.

Ok. One of the last order F's. Thanks. I'm surprised I never noticed that.

And for those that were wondering, the FT with the MU counter sunk in the nose with the door kit, it was 907A.
