Nostalgia & History > 35 Thursday - Train #374 Burlingame, California, 1967Date: 04/08/21 09:01 35 Thursday - Train #374 Burlingame, California, 1967 Author: FiveChime Each weekday evening during most of 1967, I'd take my dad's car for a short ride to the Burlingame, California Station to
watch Train #374 the Coast Piggyback. It could be depended on to pass at exactly 8 PM running at high speed down the SP commute line. The late afternoon Train #372 and 374 usually ran with LA Division GP35s, U25Bs, GP30s, GP20s, or GP9s. But, in 1967 and 1968 these trains ran with huge blocks of LA Passenger Pool FP7s or F7 units. I'll post a Don Hansen photo of one of those trains tomorrow. As I recall, on Friday evenings Train #374 was often short with only one unit like pictured. Near the end of it's operation, the train often ran with only a few cars from San Francisco but more were added at San Jose. Regards, Jim Evans Edited 1 time(s). Seven to ten years later I worked #374 many times from the Homestead down to WJct. where we had a "zipper" change on the main line in front of the yard office. Lot's of SD45's used on it then. No class lights. Ran first class on timetable authority. Usually a large pick up at Warm Springs. All gone now.

I'm amazed at what the SP was willing to run in California with just one unit in the 60's. That philosophy seems to have gone away by the early 70's for the most part.
