Nostalgia & History > A few Amtraks from 40 years ago.Date: 04/21/21 11:55 A few Amtraks from 40 years ago. Author: Conch Here's a trio from Amtrak's earlier days. The hand me down F and E units are gone and soon even Amtrak's own six axle units will join them. Everything changes.
1) In the summer of 1979, a pair of SDP40F's with 596 leading roll eastbound #6 under the signal bridge at Hermosa WY on August 25, 1979. 2) A pair of Fast Forties are assisting the eastbound San Francisco Zephyr as they overtake the Overland Mail Denver at Hazeltine, CO on 6-7-1980. During this time, UP often added power, including it's remaining E units, to help 5 and 6 maintain their schedules across Wyoming. 3) Already slowing for its station stop at Las Vegas, NM. #3 approaches a pair semaphores that were located just east of Las Vegas on the beautiful summer afternoon of July 31, 1982.
