Nostalgia & History > Three Percent Thursday - SP Siskiyou Line

They say this is approaching the ' Cole Loops ' which puts it in the 2.9 and 3.0 percent range. The SP ETT #14 shows three percent climb at a few places between Hornbrook and the Siskiyou summit.

# 1 approaching SP eastbound train in the distance, looking from the tracks across the meadow. Today the County road is along the near side of the meadow with a grade crossing to the left in the curve. Google shows a house in the meadow. Interstate 5 is in the valley over the first ridge, that's Pilot Rock to the left, a modern hiking destination.

# 2 the helpers riding behind the power, eastbounds were usually empties and would run like this without midtrains or helper crew, who would be called at Ashland for the SP westbound loads in a day or two. There seems to have been a derailment in the foreground, or at least some rail replacement. The side dumps are unusual but then again at the time SP would sneak in some ballast cars or side dumps when possilbe. Kinda tough to show the grade but those tree give some perspective.

In the CORP days when the Hill was still in servcie they'd run GP38s, lots of them! The racket coming up the hill from
Hornbrook with 6 GP38s was pretty impressive.

Great pictures and history behind them. I sure looks a great area to explore and find old SP remnants.
