Nostalgia & History > Bending trains...why curves are photographers friendsDate: 05/06/21 03:50 Bending trains...why curves are photographers friends Author: Roadjob Pursuing the art of railroad photography takes many forms. As evidenced in all sections of TO, they are all on display. Even in the sterility of railroading today, how you shoot and when you shoot it, still makes for exciting images. In the day, when you had more trains and more railroads, you could hit road A that offered scenery, or road b that had super elevated curves, or road c that offered great infrastructure. Many roads could muster all of the above and then some. For today we'll go back and get the bends again. Curvatue big and small always added flair to a moving train. The diesel era always was the angry step child of the steam days for pure drama, but there was no lack of enthusiasm for a diesel era photographer watching thousands of tons twist to or away from them.

Bob Date: 05/06/21 04:29 Re: Bending trains...why curves are photographers friends Author: SPDRGWfan I like curve photo's because I get to see the rolling stock behind the power set. The power is usually the star and most of the time we can't see what is behind them, both in photo's and in roll-by sequences in video's. Photo's like these help make up for the loss in the other type of shots.

Date: 05/06/21 08:01 Re: Bending trains...why curves are photographers friends Author: railstiesballast A proper RR curve, with superelevation and spirals and in good maintenance, is a beautiful thing.

Larry Date: 05/06/21 12:33 Re: Bending trains...why curves are photographers friends Author: DivergingClear Fanatic photos, Roadjob. EL had an impressive right-of-way. #6 is the first curve west of Campville, NY (I recognize the house in the background)... spent many a day waiting for westbounds to blast by this location to follow them along 17C to Owego.

Date: 05/06/21 16:10 Re: Bending trains...why curves are photographers friends Author: SPDRGWfan The super elevation in those curves is very evident. I can see why in the modeling world, also really adds to a great RR photo.
