Author: santafe199 My good friend Don Winslow will undoubtedly take this as another Low Light challenge. So be it. But even he will have to go a long ways to beat the average Kansas sunrise/sunset when Mama Natures puts her mind to it... :^)
1. AT&SF waycar 999049 sits on the main line at Wellington, KS. Directly ahead is 45 loads, 0 empties & 2607 tons that comprise train 861 Y-1. The engine consist of 5040, 8729, 8096 & 5606 will be responding to the throttle/air brake adjustments of engineer R H “Ralph” Brunner for the next 114 miles to a depot crew-change at Emporia. I’ll be riding with conductor L D “Dean” Strand in the waycar. My timebook shows us on duty @ 0640, with a departure @ 0720, which will occur right after the crew van delivers the head end crew to the power. Better put your feet up! I figgered as much! Compliments from this ol' Geezer (#1b*) show up about as often as the cicadas do. But I'm not sure I can wait another 17 years. > ... so stand by Mr. Lance ...
