UP C40-8 #9240
Author: bodkin6071

Two month old UP C40-8 #9240 is at Cheyenne, WY on December 5, 1988.

Notice the two different styles of trucks under it. One on the front may be from a U30C or some other older GE, and the rear truck is a GSC truck, standard on the C40's. I have seen pictures of several other UP C40-8's with these two different style of trucks. What gives?

Why didn't these units have a longer service life? Unreliable?

I think they just aged out. Plus with all the mergers of the mid-to-late 90s, UP had a bunch of newer power in the Dash-9s. Even the Dash-9s haven't been used in what feels like a decade.

GE really didn't get their act together until the Dash 9's came out.

A lot are still running, remember UP sold a lot to the CN and they run them dailey.

What's your source for this?

UP traded many of their U30C units in on their Dash 8-40C fleet, including ones built for both UP and MoPac over nearly a decade of production variation. Their trucks were reused under the new Dash 8s, and included versions from both Adirondack (the supplier on the front truck in this pic) and GSC (supplier for the rear truck who continued to provide new trucks into the Dash 7 and 8 era). The trucks from both suppliers look a bit different but are functionally identical and were often mixed together on a single engine by many railroads.

Saw this on older Santa Fe GE's also.
