Is that a train order depot there at Avery…the East Portal shack? I see cars and trucks parked there, but man that place looks rundown. Posted from iPhone Date: 09/13/21 09:26 Re: BB's MILW Joe cab ride- 48 years ago today .. 9 views Author: PasadenaSub Great photos from a big day for Bruce. What was the reason for the Joe on the opposing train in Pic #7 having the pans lowered?
Rich Date: 09/13/21 09:50 Re: BB's MILW Joe cab ride- 48 years ago today .. 9 views Author: fbe Avery was a crew change. On the east side it was Rocky Mountain crews and the west side was Coast crews.
The East Portal train order office was moved in during the early 1970s. Note there are no train order signals on the pole to allow orders to be picked up on the fly so the office is likely closed. In jphoto 4 is that a highway or railroad on the opposite side of the valley?
Date: 09/13/21 12:05 Re: BB's MILW Joe cab ride- 48 years ago today .. 9 views Author: yorknl Absolutely outstanding. I love the second shot; the headlight looks a bit like a forward-aimed cannon from that perspective. And I'm impressed that that sad-looking track structure could keep a Joe upright.
This is probably repeating the known, but pic 6 can probably be pegged down as Saltese. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/13/21 12:05 by yorknl. Date: 09/13/21 12:21 Re: BB's MILW Joe cab ride- 48 years ago today .. 9 views Author: Spoony81 pwh Wrote:

Date: 09/13/21 14:13 Re: BB's MILW Joe cab ride- 48 years ago today .. 9 views Author: fbe When there was passenger service Saltese was a flag stop to load or unload passengers. There is a steep climb from the roadway beneath the trestle to the tracks. During the winter the path might be buried under waist deep snow. If hwy 10 was snowed in the flags top might be the only way to get to Alberton or Avery and all points beyond.

Some of the substation operators became the train order operators. Best regards, Rob L. |
