LS&I Eagle Mills roster shots 1979
Author: briancdn

A brief visit to LS&I's shop at Eagle Mills yielded these photos. At the time they had an eclectic mix of old and newer power.

1) U25C 2500. I never did get a U25C runnig, but at least this one was in operable condition
2) EX ATSF RSD-15 2304 against the sun unfortunately
3) U23C 2304

4) RSD12 1850 ex B&O in the very attractive green scheme. In teresting an accurate plastic RSD-12 has never been done in any scale. The Atlas RSD-12 is a stand in RS-11 with 6 wheel trucks, but way too short.
5) U23C 2300
6) 2300 and 2500. One of my all time roster shot, a repost here and on other sites, couldn't resist. Getting the class engines in the same shot was just luck.

Great shots!  Sure do miss those Alcos, even got 4 cab rides up to the Presque Isle ore dock back in the late 70s.  Crew was at first worried that I was from the EPA or someone that was there to build a case against the railroad because of the excessive smoke.  When I explained that I was just a fan, they invited me for a ride which turned into 4 pushes up to the dock.  Great crew and great memories.

Well done.  Today the only surviving examples of both of those locomotive models are former LS&I units - U25C 2501 on static display at Marquette, MI and U23C 2300 at the Arkansas Railroad Museum in Pine Bluff, AR.

Nice shots !  Whenever we got up to the LS&I we always went to their office in Marquette, signed a release and got a Visitor's Pass. This gave you permission just about everywhere except for the top of the Ore Dock. We were always welcome in and around the Shops at Eagle Mills within reason. The crews and shop forces were very friendly and outgoing. Those were the Days !  I scanned 3 of my Passes from 1988,1989 and 1992. We always seemed to get to the LS&I in September or October in those years. The amount of Railfans that signed up for Passes during those years is reflected in the number on top of the Pass.  In 1988 the Alcos and older GEs were all still in service, and by October of 1989 the first group of ex-BN U30Cs had arrived, but the Alcos and original GEs were still in and around the Shops.  By 1992 it was an all U30C show.  I had Pass #150 in October of 1992 as opposed to #1603 and #1954 for 1988 and 1989.  We were definitely part of the surge of Railfans that made it up there to see the "Old Guard" before they were gone.

My only visits to the LS&I offices in Marquette were to purchase their ball caps in the various color schemes.  Still wear the grean one and the white one today.
