Nostalgia & History > WAG Wednesday: Rock Island E6s back-to-backDate: 09/15/21 07:51 WAG Wednesday: Rock Island E6s back-to-back Author: santafe199 After a very well-received series, here is another unique Rock Island image, this time from Bill Gibson’s camera. Hopefully it will help in letting y’all down gently from the interesting but depressing “Last Run” theme of the last few weeks. For the story behind this image click on this link: ( WAG Wednesday: (another) Rock Island oopsie... (trainorders.com) ). Photoshop-quality photo editing is a huge upgrade from my Picasa editing in the link!
1. CRI&P 628 leads train #18, the “Twin Star Rocket” over elevator trackage in a minor detour routing incident in Topeka, KS on January 26, 1963. This image is similar to, but not included in the link above. Original Kodachrome slide by William A. Gibson (WAG) Sr. Thanks for looking back! Larry Date: 09/15/21 09:07 Re: WAG Wednesday: Rock Island E6s back-to-back Author: tomstp Look at the difference in the striping of the engines. Rock Island sure deviated on its schemes a lot.

Those E6 units sure look better than the last one did in commuter service in the 70's. Gary Date: 09/15/21 11:07 Re: WAG Wednesday: Rock Island E6s back-to-back Author: RodneyZona Great shot!! Old RRock Island Lines Herington, KS passenger train and engine crews worked to and from Kansas City, MO.

Victor Date: 09/15/21 12:39 Re: WAG Wednesday: Rock Island E6s back-to-back Author: ironmtn Another beauty, guys. I'll take this easy let-down from the previous series on the western Missouri line. Not painful at all. In fact, quite nice. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a pair of Rock E's together like that in that paint scheme, but I sure do like it. It was simplified as management started to squeeze the nickels and dimes, but it's still quite classy, and very Rock Island.
Thanks for the painless withdrawal from the previous series. You are kind. Alas, we know that the real let-down will inevitably come. Getting ready.... Date: 09/15/21 13:03 Re: WAG Wednesday: Rock Island E6s back-to-back Author: agentatascadero The link provided a nice touch in that the older thread provided the rest of the story, and offered a number of other views, always a nice touch. A big bonus for the passenger train enthusiasts among us were the views which showed the whole (almost) consist.
It is cool that the wag team just happened to be present to document the mishap. I would have thought the RI would still be running observation cars in '63, but would have been wrong, judging from this photo essay. AA Stanford White Carmel Valley, CA Edited 1 time(s). Looks like I'll have to add a complete re-editing of the photos in that 9 year old thread and re-write/re-post it! Someday... Unfortunately I still have to operate under the constraints of having only 36 hours in the day & 9 days in the week for TO activity... ;^) Date: 09/15/21 15:00 Re: WAG Wednesday: Rock Island E6s back-to-back Author: SCKP187 Really neat photo. I didn’t get to see hardly any E6s and 7s when I was growing up
