To date, the only GSs I've seen with the unusual silvered area above the smoke box door was 4460, for her last run, over Donner Pass. I had always thought of that aas a shopping error, but, if it was done on a number of locomotives (disclaimer: this is only the second such job I've seen), then it may have been per company instructions....I hope that was never the case.

Tom E. Thanks for the heads up, Steamman. For me, at least, this means 4460 was the only example of that painting error.......somwhow, this many decades later, I feel relieved.
