Variety and bouncing BN SD's
Author: BrianA

Hard to believe these two video clips were taken 22 years ago!!! On 9-6-99 we have the BNSF M-INBPAS at Auburn, WA with BN 8064/BN 6775/ATSF 7416/BNSF 6106/BNSF 3537/LRCX 9529/LRCX 8108 at 3:10 PM. I was up at South Seattle for the H-PASVBT with 6797/6707/7803/8146/7914/3516 at 4:56 PM, all units still lettered for BN. Train had 80 cars. Sure do wish BNSF trains still looked like these.

In the second clip the units are bouncing pretty good as they exit the frame.  Is that bad track and exactly what causes that?  Jointed rail so wonder if that has something to do with it.

The trucks on older locomotives are prone bounciness....whatever sets it off such as wavy rail, once it gets started it feeds on itself until the track smooths out. Modern snubbers can damp it pretty quickly but they have to be maintained and indeed the whole truck.

While the locos bounced, the cars did not bounce......................

The more times I watch the second clip the locomotives sound quiet as they pass by so I guess it was eibbon rail there after all.  Freight cars sure made a lot of noise though.

Thanks for an interesting look back video! I've noticed in the backyard that the Locomotives, especially the DPU's become bouncing Betty's over the Jefferson St. crossing.

The cars are much lighter.  They did bounce slightly.
