Remember when you had to dress up...
Author: santafe199

...just to go downtown?

Can you still get a 15-cent milkshake at that Rexall drug store? How’s the Chow Mein at the King Joy Lo? Is that babe in the black skirt single? Why is that older lady looking right at Bill’s camera. How many of these folks are still alive, 65 years later...

1. KCPS 785 is eastbound on 12th St, stopped at Main St in Kansas City, MO on April 21, 1956.
65 year old Kodachrome slide by William A. Gibson (WAG) Sr.

Thanks for looking back!

A historic gem - He captured so much of the now almost-forgotten past in just that one shot.

Take me back to then.   I was sixteen, driving and a holy terror in 1956.  1957 I met my wife to be and in 62 married her.  The memories.
I lost her this April and this is an awesome scene of life back then.

A great scene, and it almost looks like SF with those street lamps.

The best part is the PCC car and the folks who have opened the windows, with arms hanging out.  Now that's the way to ride--open windows on a PCC car in downtown, hearing, seeing and even smelling all of the big city--like when you pass by a good diner and smell the steaks on the grill...

Remarkable picture of one of my favorite cities in my birth year. We were certainly a different country back then; almost naive in our world view yet amazing none the less. Practically everyone smoked back then; one habit I'm glad is almost gone.

I was 16 in 1956, a Junior in high school and riding the Long Island Railroad to see Brooklyn Dodger baseball games. The clothes that we wore back in those days were horrible. I am so glad that things have changed. I hope I live to see the day when there are NO neck ties or high-heeled shoes.

Myself?  I'm ambevilent......I do prefer the choices available to be as casual as one wants.....while deploring the freedom to choose that so many display in their wardrobes.  I think back then people, and society as a whole, had a LOT more class.  It is us slobs that make well dressed people so stand out these days, whereas it once was SOP.

Very nice photo!

People may not dress up as much, but once again, one can ride a streetcar on both Main and 12th Streets in Downtown Kansas City.

What a great shot of a moment in time...would be interesting to see a shot from the same location today.

Yes, a good idea for a "before and after" shot.  Bet there wouldn't be anywhere near as much foot traffic, except maybe from office workers.  Today everyone is out at the malls in the suburbs.  There were few suburbs back then.

Here's it is from Google Maps - the building in the background is the only recognizable landmark.

Lance - thanks for posting this gem of a shot!

The date of Bill's photograph, April 21, 1956, was a Saturday.  This explains why folks in the photo are dressed casually, for the mid-50's.  Not many suits and neck ties to be seen that day.

My home town, when I loved to ride the street car downtown, either to buy Stride Rite shoes at Robinson's on Main Street, eat lunch at Myron Green's, or visit my dad's office on Tenth Street, where he was often to be found working on Saturday mornings.

Thank you, Bill, Art, and Lance.
