Aeroglide, by request (alpha)
Author: santafe199

A while back I posted a thread with a variety of Santa Fe F-units pictured. Here’s a link: ( F-unit Friday: Emporia in 1973 (trainorders.com) ). Citing a personal connection TO member ‘ATSF90East’ aka ‘Bruce in KC’ liked the background in one of the shots, so I went digging through my Santa Fe file on roster/consist shots with the same lettering in the background. And I found a bunch! So many that I’m breaking it up into 2 threads. The “alpha” thread is below in numerical order, and the “omega” thread will be right behind in a day or so...

1. AT&SF 2122 on April 15,1981.

2. AT&SF 2458 on April 29,1981.

3. AT&SF 2484 on April 13,1978.

Nice shots, Lance!  Thanks for posting the link.  I missed that one when you posted it before.

I believe I got to work on the 2549 for about 10 minutes once at North Wichita in 1977/78.  Was on an afternoon switch job and we went to get her out of the roundhouse in new condition like that photo.  It was raining heavily and as we backed out of the roundhouse we started taking on copious amounts of water from the roof.  Looking up, Cleburne had a square hole cut in the ceiling where the air conditioner was to be placed, had a instert or plug if you will installed but no weather stripping.  The engineer said he wasn't going to spend a shift wondering when he would get electrocuted, so we went back in the roundhouse.  Called the yardmaster and told him what was going on and we were going to take another engine and 2549 would be out of service until fixed.  The next afternoon I was working and we were in the yardmaster tower and 2549 went by with another switch crew and the mechanical department "fixed" the leak with a black square patch of roofing tar..........

Interesting.  The 2549 was originally outshopped as a round-roof CF7 in October 1973, so you must have gotten it shortly after it was retrofitted with an angular cab.  The retrofit program likely began around the time the angular cab was introduced on new CF7's in early 1977, but I've never come across documentation of when Santa Fe stopped retrofitting.  Around three dozen were never retrofitted before they were wrecked, scrapped, or sold off.
