Nostalgia & History > F-unit Friday: Solomon, KS ala 1990

I can add my late friend, Jim Watson to the long list of other friends & railfan contacts who attended this event 32 years ago in Solomon, KS. A seminal railfan event gathering UP 844, BN’s dark green & cream “Executive” F units and Santa Fe stainless steel led by Super Fleet Red & Silver.

With such a gathering of Kodachrome-worthy color I was certainly singing the blues while being stuck 1300+ miles away up in the Big Sky. I was into my fourth year of employment with Montana Rail Link and just couldn’t finagle the needed days off to come home for the occasion. I pulled every string I could think of.

But thank goodness for the slide-trading & general sharing aspect of this great hobby. I can at least amass a handful of digital images from an amazing array of fellow railfan photographers who were there...

Remembering the late Jim Watson, aka ‘UP6900’

PS: I had to use Photoshop’s ‘Sky Replacement’ feature here. My original Hewlett-Packard (junk) scanner was on its last legs and kicked out an image with those faint, but tell-tale pastel rainbow streaks in the light blue sky. It was not long after this that I picked up my first Epson scanner, a V550. Glory-hallelujah!!! :^)

Compared to past HP results my Epson is a quantum leap better in quality. BUT... I'm far from the only person here on TO who extols the virtues of Epson scanning technology.... :^)
