Before it was ATSF 3562, this GP38-2 was built as Toledo, Peoria and Western 2002 (in May 1977).  When Santa Fe acquired the TP&W, the 2002 was renumbered ATSF 3562.
lt was later painted in SPSF paint and given the number 2371 . . . <snip>

EDIT: See Mr. Werkema's post below correcting the following erroneous statement I placed at the end of my post:

. . .  to fit into SPSF renumbering scheme.

The 2370-series numbers were applied to the GP38-2's while they were still in blue and yellow in March, April and May of 1985 (the first experimental SPSF-painted locomotives didn't appear until August, and routine repainting didn't commence until November).  According to the renumbering plan in Shine's SPSF Motive Power 1986, those numbers weren't part of the SPSF numbering scheme.  Had the merger gone through, the ex-TP&W GP38-2's would have been renumbered again to SPSF 2400-2410.

Mea culpa!  I misinterpreted some roster notes I found online.  Thank you for the correction, Evan!

Mr. Shine says the following about the renumbering of the GP38-2's in his Santa Fe 1987 Motive Power Pictorial:

"When Cleburne remanufactured the GP38's into the 2300 class, the GP38-2s were again renumbered, this time in the 2370 class between March and May 1985.  Six of the eleven GP38-2s, went in for routing maintenance, received the red and yellow scheme in anticipation of the SPSF merger, in 1986."
